What is robotics?
"Robotics is one of the largest growing tech branches around the globe. we can see the drastic growth in the number of companies that start investing in robotic technologies."
Introduction-to-robotics
what is a robot?
A robot is a machine that is programmed to do one or more tasks .so
here people normally ask what is the difference between a robot and a
machine!!
I would like to answer it as "robot is also a machine with a
little more brain"
or in other words, " A robot is a type of automated
machine that can execute specific tasks with little or no human intervention
and with speed and precision."
What is the Future of robotics?
The robotics industry is expected to grow up to 250-260billion by
the end of 2030.
so those who become skilled with robotics now are gonna
be a big part of this robotics revolution by the time.
The main aim
of robotics is to help humans from hazardous-boring - dangerous operations.
dangerous
situations like war fields/mining boring operations of manufacturing
industries.
Hazardous works like manhole cleaning/handling radioactive
elements.etc
There are several companies which are already developed
robots for manhole cleaning, mining, Underground inspections, etc
we can
take the example of the "robonaut" from NASA.
Robonaut is a
humanoid robot ( means it is built to look like a person)which is developed by
NASA for space operations.
its deployed in the international space
station to help us with our space research. its design is kept humanoid so
that it can replace human life in space stations up to an extent.
Robonaut1
was there in operation on ISIS until 2015 .and robot 2 is currently in ISIS
and undergoing test runs.
So like this, we can use robotics in several
ways for the betterment of humanity.
If we look in deep we can see
several other examples also, like the da Vinci robot, which is a medical robot which is designed to help surgeons/doctors in
medical surgeries with better precision.
Yeah..robots can be better than
humans sometimes !!, so da Vinci is designed to avoid human
errors in surgeries and to make it easier for surgeons.
Types of robots!
Like all other things in the world robots can also be categorized
into several levels based on multiple factors like,
Indoor robots :
Robots are meant for indoor operations, so their localization techniques will be Relaying on sensors like LIDAR, IMU, camera, etc (as GPS won't give proper values in an indoor environment ) - GPS denied navigation
Outdoor robots :
Robots that are designed for outdoor applications, if it is mobile robots then the navigation stack will be using GPS and other combinations of sensors and will be capable of adapting or surviving the outdoor conditions
Industrial robots:
Robots that are designed for industrial
operations .it will be mostly custom-built for particular industries or
programmed for industrial operations like SCARA or ABB arms for car
manufacturing industries.
those robots in the industry will be IP-rated
based on their field of operations. and they will be normally heavy-duty and
precise robots.
Cobot:
Cobots or co-bot as the name suggests it will be designed to work with humans these will be soft and non-hazardous .and these kinda robots will have several safety mechanisms to ensure the safety of human co-workers. and most of the time they will be having a virtual boundary, and the robots won't act outside this virtual coordinates in any situation.
Manipulator:
manipulators or robotics arms as mostly used in manufacturing industries. it will be a robotic arm capable of grabbing, plucking, pressing, painting, etc based on the industry requirements. They can also be divided into multiple categories based on the Degree of freedom(DOF).
UR10 robotic armAMR :
AMR: autonomous mobile robotsRobots are capable of moving from one position to another position automatically. they will be having a map of the environment or/& will be able to sense their environment by using a combination of sensors (lidar, camera, Imu..), the robots involved in warehouse package movements are the best example of this category.
AGV :
Autonomous guided vehicle
These are also kind of AMR
but it will be more like a line follower .it will have a defined path to
follow by some markers or magnetic lines or metal lines .so they will move
around the area only through these guiding lines .they don't have much idea
about the environment. but all its duty will be to travel along the area by
using these guidelines as reference.
Humanoid :
Robots that look like or are designed like humans are
called humanoid robots. Robonaut and SoFi are examples of humanoid robots.
there
are lots more examples like Pepper nao etc which are all humanoid robots.
currently,
such robots are mostly used in the entertainment area and as a receptionist as
it is more likely to deal with human users the humanly-appearance of the robot
make it easy to make the best customer satisfaction, But in reality, the
potential of the humanoid robots industry is much bigger as it can mimic most
of the human behavior, it will be a good replacement for human in dangerous
activities

Micro and Nano-robots:
Micro and nanorobots are tiny robots .they can be used for several military operations like spaying and inspection and also have a future in the medical field for repairing internal damages, etc.
UAV :
unmanned areal vehicledrones are the best popular examples in this category .any robot which is capable of flying in the air will be coming in this category. in better words UAV is an aircraft without any human pilot, crew, or passengers on board. It is currently used for package delivery, drone inspections, tunnel/bridge inspections, etc
UGV :
An unmanned ground vehicle is a vehicle that operates while in contact with the ground and without an onboard human presence. UGVs can be used for many applications where it may be inconvenient, dangerous, or impossible to have a human operator present.
AUV :
An autonomous underwater vehicle is a robot that travels underwater
AUV
stands for autonomous underwater vehicle and is commonly known as an un-crewed
underwater vehicle. AUVs can be used for underwater survey missions such as
detecting and mapping submerged wrecks, rocks, and obstructions that can be a
hazard to navigation for commercial and recreational vessels
WCR:
Wall climbing robots which is capable of climbing the walls .it will be using pneumatic or other techniques to achieve this inclined navigation
